0 nitrates

Well I think I got my new 55 balanced. after I set it up my api test kit nearly maxed out in nitrates due to the dirt. I tested tonight and 0 nitrates. my plants are doing their job. hope this keeps up.

Did you do water changes in addition to your "plants doing their job"?

I'd be a little leery based on my experience with API's nitrite kit indicating a false 0, when in fact it was still over-range high. It's possible the nitrAte test doesn't do that, but I'd do a large water change and re-test anyway.

That's awesome I've never considered a dirt substrate but I bet the plants love it. Are there pics someplace of the tank ?

i have a few pics in the freshwater general section of the forum under the post 55 stocked. and i am sure that it is reading correctly freshy. my normal readings are about 10-20ppm in my other tanks. and i've tested ammonia and nitrites as well and everything in that tank has been 0 besides the nitrates which were up but now at 0 as well.
