I bought a 37 gall. tall (picking up tonight) it's coming with 2 fish. The seller just called them African Cichlids; 1 is yellow & 1 is blue, at a glance they look pretty much the same in 2 diff. colors.

The reason I'm buying the tank is for more space for the fish I have. (blue gourami, common pleco, barbs, danios, cories)

What should I do with these fish that are coming with the tank?? Any guesses on what they are? What can I expect to get from a local pet store for them?

I'm afraid I'll kill them if I keep them too long; not knowing Anything about them :-(

If they are electric blue/yellow, our local stores seem to charge about $7-$8 for them for small ones (about an inch). So maybe you can get $5 for the both of them. Just ask the seller about how to keep them. Maybe he will throw in a little fish food (if they eat something specific) to keep you going for a few days :)

if they are electric blue/yellow, then dont put them in with your other fish. they can be reasonably agressive and are not suitable for a community tank
Most cichlids are..........

It could be either electric blue/yellow or kenyis.

All are pretty easy to breed, aggressive, and grow pretty large......compared to most community fish. They need at least 50gals i would say.

A lot of stores don't give much for common cichlids, but see if you could get some store credit.

sounds like kenyis, they are too agressive for the other fish that you will be getting, your tank is too small and it wont be cycled when you get them so i would just have the fish store keep them and set the tank up for the fish you wanted to.

Thank you all for your help!!

just got it all home...... Going to see if a store will give credit right now (hope I can finally hook-up w/ some black ruby barbs soon!)

Pretty fish, about 2½"-3" each but I just can't keep them in the plastic bowl she handed them to me in until the tank ready for them again!

37gal. - heater, double tube light (one blown tho), aquclear filter, the 2 fish, natural color gravel, 2 pieces of driftwood, some plastic plants (+ more decorations) & stand for $150
What ya think???

New home for my crowded babies soon tho!!
