hey,

i have a 10 gal tank i wanna set up, but i need to cycle it. i have a 30 gal set up right now. i was wondering if i take some of the gravel from my 30 and put it in the 10 will it cycle on its own right away, or would i still have to add a fish in there?

why dont you fishless cycle, its easier, usually faster and it doesnt hurt or kill fish, gravel will help but not nearly as much as a filter or filter cartridge, if you put the gravel in, raise temp high and fishless cycle it should cycle fairly fast, theres an article on this site on fishless cycling also theres many posts you can search for

What would happen if you took a hob filter for a 10 gal and left it on a existing larger tank (30-50+maybe) for a time, maybe add some extra sand/gravel as well.
Then when the filter has a good bit of life in it, add that onto a new 10 gal, as well as however many gals of water needed, sand/gravel, any plants or ornaments all from the larger.
Would this = instant cycle?
And is a fishless really faster?
