I was wondering... since that 7 watt heater I bought always overheats the 5.5 gallon tank, do you think that it would perhaps warm the 10 gallon tank the right temp? I know it says not to use it in a tank over 5 gallons, but why exactly is that? Does it have to do with the fact that it won't heat the whole tank correctly? Doesn't it then make some sort of sense to think that since it doesn't regulate that using it in a larger tank would help keep the water cooler? If this doesn't make sense to anyone else please let me know. I was just wondering if it would work.

I think a lot of times they'll say not to put it in a tank larger than X because if you do that the heater will be working overtime to heat the tank and could cause it to burn out. 7 watts isn't really enough for a 10G anyway...I wouldn't risk it if it were my tank. I'd get a 25 watt that you can adjust the temp on.

It would constantly be on and burn out quick. Don't risk it. Big als has some cheap $5.99 for 100 and 50 watts and $6.99 for 200 watts. I bought a 200 watt one and it has been working great. Its not submersible but does the job and cheap. I bought it as a back-up and ended up using it when i dropped and broke the one in my 29 gal.

Ok, thanks gals!!!! I won't do it. I was worried about my Oto that I got today. I went online though and found put that they are good between 68 and 77 degrees. My tank is pretty stable at about 72 all the time. So, hopefully the little feller will last a couple of weeks in there until I can get a heater.

if you can stand to wait for an online order to ship (which i know can be difficult, lol!)... petsmart is selling their rena cal basics nice and cheap ($6.20 for the 50w...nice size for the 10g).

http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030071&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776891&bmUID=1136924502180&itemNo=0&Ntt=rena+cal&In=All&previousText=rena+cal&N=2

and if you wanna go fancy-schmancy, the rena cal top lite excel 50w is $18.

i got the basic as a hand-me-down from echoofformless because he got a bigger tank, and it has worked great for both him and me. he picked the fancy-schmancy one to replace it in his 20 long, and still has nothing but good things to say about them.
