I noticed petsmart had some 10g for 10$. I was wondering if thats a good deal? They dont come with hoods, and the hoods they sell are like 30$ for a 10g. You can buy a 10g w/ a hood and its $36, so you save a couple of bucks. But can you get hoods for a 10g cheaper than 30$? or is it better to just buy an aquarium with the hood.

if i just used the 10g for small fry and guppys or something would i need a hood? (perhaps this question should be in beginners :p )

That's about average for a 10g tank. You can sometimes find them for about $7 on sale or in walmart etc.

For a fry tank you should really get a hood. It stops the fish from jumping out. Often the incandescent hoods are cheaper than the flourescent ones, and could be an option for you.

There are often good deals on second-hand tanks in local classified ads or at garage sales, which sometimes gives you an even better deal with more equipment.

The best way to decide is to compare the built quality of the tank and the hood to decide. And since it is only $6 difference, get what you like best, coz it's gonna be your baby :)

Happy shopping...
