I got a 14 gallon last week. It is my first real tank. I have started cycling it. My friend gave me two platies to speed up the process. They seem to be doing fine. I haven't decorated the tank yet, but I do have two live plants in it. After the cycling process what other types of fish do you suggest to add?

When you say you havent decorated it, do you mean there is no gravel etc?

Platies like jave fern and java moss plants.

If you havent already get some gravel or sand for your tank! This is where the good bacteria forms when you cycle the tank (i believe)

If they have a filter (like a bio wheel ect.) with a place for bacteria you can skip the gravel. You are correct though, If they do not have a filter of this type then substrate is need for the bacteria colony.

Im sorry! I do have gravel and a filter. I ment I havent decorated it with drift wood or large rocks yet. I was waiting to see if my plants lived. My friend said you can tell if a fish tank is healthy by the plants.

Its best to test the water with a test kit, plants can live in water that will murder fish.

14 gallon tanks make an interesting planted tank. I had one a few years ago and have a thread somewhere here on MFT. I just planted it again, but don't have my CO2 system hooked up to it yet. When I first had it running I was using sand, now it has Ecocomplete. As for fish I usually had guppies or bettas. Good luck with yours!
