I recently "inherited" a 2.5 gal mini-bow from one of my firends. I have it going with my CT betta and a few ember tetras. Twice today i've found the betta stuck to the filter, it's one of those whisper in tank filters. I remember being told about one "kit" filter that was bad and sucked fish up...im guessing this is the one. So i want to get a different filter for it. Drs Foster & Smith has an "Azoo Palm Filter". Would that be good? Anyone know of other filter options for a small aquarium?

I know that bettas dont necessarily need a filtered environment, so im assuming he would be okay without one. But what about the embers, do they need a filter ? Im only asking because it might be a couple of weeks before i get one.

Well it may not be a problem with just the filter either. That is a small amount of water your tring to filter, so it's not going to take much to create a fairly good current in it. I might try the palm filters, as they are for very small tanks and might do better.

The tetra's do need some type of filtration. So if your going to be a little bit without a filter I would feed a little less, and be sure to up the amount of water changes you do till you can get one.

I gave one of those mini-bows to a friend and the filter has a flow regulator on the back. There are three or four settings. The lowest is barely a trickle.

Its a good little Whisper filter, its just hard to find replacements at some stores. I gave one to the receptionist at my doctors office and her platy had fry and didn't get sucked up when the setting was on low.

Try turning the settings down.

My betta does the same to my filter. I watched as I would remove him by turning off the filter I had smaller fish in at the time and they didn't get caught. So I decided to watch the tank and I was amazed to see that the betta was purposley swimming by the filter and leaning over to get stuck. He did eventually stop. But I don't have him he got sick and died (not because of the filter he played to ruff with the bala and well he got a riped fin so i moved him into another tank. It was a 20gal (I know i need to get the bala out but he still little and ill have the money to get a bigger tank for him in about 8months) I too had a whisper filter.

i just got a wisper filter for my 1 gallon betta tank, i think it is a new design because it doesnt have an internal pump, it attatches to an airpump (included) and the force of the air bubbles created water flow through this filter, and it is relatively quiet too. it cost around 10 dollars at petsmart and is good for a 1-3 gallon tank. so the suction shouldnt be a problem with this one.
