I just got one, too, and have wondered the same thing. My temp went up pretty fast but seems to be holding at about 74. It's been on that temp for about three days now, so today I add the betta!!

yeah I know that but I have been told to turn off the light so that the fish can SLEEP, well so I did that came in this morning and the tank was 66!!
Needless to say he had a fungus on him and now is dead. I just got him I am taking the corps back to LFS and not getting any more fish until I figure out what is wrong with my tank, though I have sterilized the snot out of it and all the rocks and hidy hole.

The bad thing about that jr. heater is that if even once you let the water get below that water mark the heater will shut off...FOR GOOD. There's no turning back on. You may want to think about a larger tank, as they're so much easier to deal with...you can get a real heater to fit in there too ;) I'm sorry for your losses...

Have you read up on cycling and do you have ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits? If you've sanitized the whole tank then the tank probably builds up ammonia and other nasties pretty quick unless you're doing daily water changes.

You might have also gotten a bad batch of bettas at that store...maybe try looking for one at another store that seems somewhat active and has bright colors.

he was active and bright red with silery green scales!

I might just fill the tank let it sit for 1 week and then put another fish in. The tank is on my desk at work, can't get too big the 2.5 is just fine. I just can't figure out Why this is happening to me. Maybe it's not my turn yet to have a fish.

Don't give up whatever you do there is always a solution to your problem. The betta could have a problem from the store as Froggy said. The sudden water temperature could've been the last straw for the betta. You should cycle the tank prior to doing any more fishkeeping. And upgrading to a 10 gallon for a betta would be most beneficial to it.
