I just aquired a 20 gallon high aquarium and a 20 gallon long iron stand. Is it unsafe to use this stand to support the tank? The stand is a standard-looking metal stand providing support to the tank on all 4 sides, however since the stand is longer than the tank it would not support one side of the tank.

dangerous or no big deal?

In my opinion: dangerous.

You can put a piece of plywood directly on the four sides of the frame on the stand, and then put the tank on the stand. You need to have full contact with all of the bottom edges of the frame of the tank.

Thanks. Thats what I'm thinking about doing. Acutally I think the stand is for a 29 gallon tank - its 31 inches long. The tank is only 24 inches long.

A 29 gallon tank and a 20gallon long tank has the same footprint. The 29gallon is 18 inches tall, while the 20 gallon is 12 inches tall. Both have a footprint of 30inches by 12inches.

I ended up selling the stand. I really don't like the look of the metal stands. I've got a nice cabinet I built for my 18 and will probably to the same for the 20 (unless I end up selling that too - and put the proceeds into the 18g).

I was commenting on Doomhed's comment that it was for a 29gallon tank, stating that the 29gallon and the 20gallon long is the same size, so either will fit on the stand.

I've used the plywood method to put a 15 gallon on a stand for a 29 or 20long (15 gallon is the same footprint as the 20gallon high). Worked for years. As long as you support the entire frame's edge.

But no matter, as the original poster got or is getting a new stand :)
