My brother recently gave me his old 29g tank, and I need to buy a new filter, but I want to find one as quiet as my old whisper. I already tried the emperor 280, which was kinda big, but i heard it was good so i tried it. It was too loud. Are the penguin filters with the bio wheels any quieter? Any suggestions for quiet filters would help.
Thanks
Jeff

I love my fluval 304s for my 50 and 30. I think they are very quiet and efficient. Petco or petsmart has a good-buy-online price for them with free shipping so they end up being about $80 when you can spend about $120 at a store. My opinion but hope that helps.

TH eheim liberties are silent, but they are crap if you dont clean them every time you do a water change. I go with the aquaclears HOB filter instead, they are wonderful. Silent and really low maintenence, not to mention they work really well at cleaning the tank.

Whispers work well, I have one and it's quieter than my Aquaclears
I think an aquaclear 300 is a bit big for a 29gallon, the AC200 would be better imo. anything with a biowheel will make a splashing noise.

imo a canister for a 29 is overkill.

whispers are quiet but i find they dont do as food a filtering job, the penguins make alot of splashing, the emperors are quiet as long as you keep the water up to the bottom of the outtake, aquaclears are quiet and great filters, i also see no reason for a canister

Somonas,

Guess it depends on the stocking levels. I'm a fan of over filtering. I have a ac150 on my 10 at work and a penguin 330 + fluval 304 on my 20g (for now...the fluval will be going to my 55 along with an ac300 in july).

Ok, after reading a whole bunch of opinions and reviews, I have decided to change to an Aquaclear 300. I know it is a little big, but like DarthV said, I am also a fan of overfiltering. What do you guys think of the Aquaclear as opposed to the Whisper?

why does everything have to be quiet?have you ever been to a river or stream there's nothing quiet about them.i like the sound of water spashing it tells me that my filters are working.now i admit i don't like a filter that buzzes allthe time though cause that just means it will eventualy break from all the vibration
