At my local Petsmart they have a 37 gallon tank with Eclipse 3 hood for $199, all nice and boxed up.  This would be a bad deal, right?  Unless of course a 37 gallon tank costs $100.  Are there any advantages to having a 37 gallon tank besides if I want to keep angelfish?  The surface area is the same so if I don't keep angels I would probably be better off getting a 29 gallon then or even a 20 gallon long depending on the fish, right?

i personally would stay away from the eclipse hoods. i've owned two. they work great..but if you're serious about this hobby..and really get into it..those eclipse hoods are really limiting. you can really modify them cause they're so compactly made. but anyways....

if you want angelfishes i would suggest a tall tank instead of a longer tank. i personally prefer longer tanks cause fishes swim horizontal not vertical.

also, you wouldn't need as much lighting cause it'll be closer to the bottom of a tank with a longer tank.

i've kept two angels in a 29gallon and they were happy. but that's my opinion.  ;)

And if you really want to get into plants, a taller tank is better imo because a lot of plants grow quite tall.

at least your cories swim. my always just sat underneath this rock and wouldn't come out. blah! although once in awhile it would blast upwards to get a gulp of air and then go back into hiding.

Cories like to school. Some cories are so stupid they think their reflection in the glass is another cory and do some "glass pacing" to try and be with that school (even though it's themselves, doh!).  The three emerald greens I have don't get very active at all except when food is in the tank, then they wriggle all over in their food-finding dance. No are the ones in the store tanks particularly active, except to food-find.

But cories do use air to make sounds...I've heard them.  A kinda of croak. It's soo cool!
