5 Gallon

Hello,

I could use some advice. I have a 5 gallon tank with a male betta in it. There is a bio wheel filter and a 50 Watt submersible heater installed. I was wondering what other fish I could get to go along with the betta with out over crowding the tank? Any suggestions?

Pygmy cories for the bottom would work (need a group though). Or an oto for algae eating, or a snail or some shrimp. Depending on the temperament of the betta, you might be able to add a few small fish that aren't bottom dwellers (like female guppies, dwarf platies, rasboras, etc.).

I wouldn't put anything in it. If you would like something go small. Also an algae-eater/Bottom-feeder is what I would go with.

You could probably put in 2 dwarf platy if you wanted. Maybe 2 White Clouds. Or three pygmy cory cats. Nothing more than that though. If you find something you really like and aren't sure if you can put it in, just ask here and I'm sure someone will give you some advice.

If you want an algae eater, go for this one: Tropical Fish for Freshwater Aquariums: Otocinclus Catfish They stay really small and keep the tank really really clean. You could also add 2 skinny tetras, most of them stay under 2 inches. I wouldn't add any more than that, though, not with a 5 gal.

I'd concur with the otos and corys. They stay out of the way of the betta and vice versa. They don't mind a smaller tank; plus they assist with keeping the tank clean so you're getting purpose out of it as well.
