I already have an Eheim ECCO 2232. It says it's good for tanks up to 35 gallons. I was thinking that I could use this with some type of HOB filter. Would this provide enough filteration? Which HOB should I get?

My tank will house primarily angels and low light live plants.

Make sure that your new filter is capable of filtering at least fifty gallons of water. I have two filters running on my tank and will always do so in the future. It is a nice back up in case one of them goes on the blink. You could allow one filter to provide most of the mechanical and the other to provide the biological. I would make the new filter that is rated for a 50 gallon tank provide the biological and let the eheim provide the mechanical.

I am actually going away from from my HOB and getting a Filstar cannister. It is about the same price as a lot of the larger HOB, but from what I have read it provides superior filtration. Many users compare it to the eheim's they run. Maybe worth a look. I just purchased one from Dr. Fosters and Smith from around 85 bucks shipping and handling. It is rated for a 75 gallon tank.

A biowheel type filter would be a good HOB. Might want to look at the Emperor series. I believe they have a compartment in addition to the cartridges for the media of your choice. I would look at one rated for 150+ gph.

I've heard good things about the hagen aquaclear filters. I have a 110 (used to be called 500) coming in, got it for like $40 online. My old penguin 330 and 170 do a pretty good job, and was like $30 (the 330) when I bought it, but I'd like to step up the filtering a little more. Try to go for flow 10x the aquarium size. ie 50 = 500 gallons per hour.
