Clown loaches are beatuiful fish but they an readh a foot in length. Zebra are a greater tank breaker, but in this community do you want a lot of small fish, small to mid, or large fish? *celebratesmiley*

The size doesn't matter to much to me,just as long as they all get along.A little personality would be nice.I only have one pet store near me.Its a petland discount .The fish look very unhealthy.I saw fin rot, ich, bloat to name a few just by looking in the tank and I'm no expert.I have to travel farther to find healthier fish.

If you like lively, active, entertaining, peaceful fish, I'd recommend Siamese Algae Eaters.  They don't harass their tankmates, they don't damage plants, and they eat any kind of algae that grows.  You might have to clean the front glass from time to time during water changes, but the SAEs will help keep algae under control.  Since they're always in motion, they're fun to watch.  I like seeing mine do their loop-de-loops.

Since they're omnivorous and always scavenging, they'll clean up uneaten food.  Even though my trio are the only inhabitants of their tank, I still feed them flake food to help round out their diet.  They are always hungry, always cleaning up the gravel, plants, driftwood and glass.

You'll need to know how to identify true SAEs if you decide to get one.  The false SAEs can become highly aggressive with age and lose interest in eating algae.  Here's a good webpage to help you identify them:

http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/cyprinid.html

I've not seen any site recommending driftwood for SAEs but I would recommend it, having seen how much my SAEs enjoy working on the driftwood in my tank.  They do seem to enjoy company and I've seen mine lie in a group, being very touchy feely with each other during rare moments of rest.

And a warning: they're FAST and very difficult to net.  Once they're in your tank, don't plan on moving them anytime soon because netting them will require taking everything out of your tank.  They can zoom upwards very fast and break the surface, so make sure the tank is covered.

clowns grow pretty slow, and you could keep a couple in that 50 gallon for a while...  But I also recommend the yoyo loach, it has a lot of personality but they dont get as big as clown loaches...  Both are nice for snail problems too ;)

My LFS or should I say local fish distributor, told me clown loaches grow 1 inch per year, and can get to 15 inches in 15 years. As for the tank, small schooling fish are fine, neon tetras, silter tip tetras, rosy barbs, rummy nose tetras are nice but piky & sensitive, silver hatch fish not marbled, finicky, danios are good. NO angel fish with small fish or large goldfish with small fish. If you decide to go with Ciclids, choose only the general cichlids from the same area, like african ciclids or amazon ciclids, BUT DO NOT MIX. Tay will not get along very well. Colored Parrots are pretty good for your tank, but can be pricy, choose are good LFS for your selection, get second opinion if not sure. Some store work off just selling you fish just to sell it too you. Books will help also. *thumbsup2*
