55 gallon tank set up

i just got a 55 gallon kit for christmas and i plan on putting them needlefish i seen at petsmart in there. i was wondering what filter do you all prefer i go with?? i will not be adding live plants in there just the fake ones.

I would go with something similar to a Rena XP2 or 3 canister and a large HOB filter.

Most definitely the rena xp2 or 3 and HOB such as aquaclear. Right now i am just running the xp3 on my 55 gal and the water is crystal clear. Great filter.

So you guys recommend using both the canister and the HOB at the same time?

The reason I ask is the 55-gallon we just bought came with the Whisper 60 HOB, so I'm wondering if I need more filtration.

You'll find that over time the whisper will lose a lot of its power and may not even be enough when its brand new. A lot of people like to have two different types of filters on a larger tank because A) You have a backup if something goes wrong with one or the other and B) You really can't have too much filtration, but you CAN have too little.
