What is a good way to light a 72" FW tank? I see at Big Al's that 72" VHO fluorescent 160wt are around $35 but I don't see a unit to hold them other than the $700 multibulb hoods. Where is a place to get a 72" hood light?

Are you wanting to light this for live plants or just for a new look?

Your best bet might be to get 2 x 36" fixtures. Or, you could consider metal halides.

We have a 72" compact fluorescent light on our tank, that was from a manufacturer going out of business, I believe it's a 2 x 96w fixture.

You could try www.aquatraders.com, but you would probably have to change out the saltwater-type bulbs, which could cost extra (although you could sell the SW bulbs on eBay, etc.). They always seem to have the lowest prices on lighting. www.petmeister.com also has some good prices, and some of the fixtures have a choice of bulbs.

$7 for a 48 in shoplight from Lowes or Home Depot. If live plants are not a concern, you could try one and see how well it lights the extra foot on either side of the light. I would say it would do fine.

If you don't have any way of hanging these over the tank (which would give best light) then look for some that have the edged of the reflector comeing down further than the bulbs. This may allow you to set it ontop of the tank.
