Hello, I own a 90 Gal. reef tank, stocking fish, invertebrates, liverock, and corals.

I am upgrading my filtration from a canister filter, therefore, doing away with it.

My idea is to have a prefilter overflow box bringing water down to a wet/dry system with filter floss and trickle bio balls, a protien skimmer in the sump, actived carbon, and one power head to help water flow better.

Is this the right idea?

What essential filtration system is recommended for this setup? Please comment on the must haves, versus the optimal system.

Most of what you listed is somewhat optional IMO. A skimmer is a must for a reef tank, but your liverock will actually filter your tank.

Definatelly a skimmer. The rest I'd label as optional.

Lets see...If you have live rock 30lbs+ then you dont need any biological media.

Drop the filter floss and the Bioballs...will increase nitrates bad for reef tanks.

Get a large protein skimmer(rated for a 150 gallon Plus...be on the safe side)

Depending on the flow of the return pump. You may need more then one powerhead.

So all in all...big skimmer, no bioballs, and a few powerheads.
