Sorry forgot to get to this post yesterday. Don't be mislead, thats not "About it" that can go in there.

In my experiences (though i'm sure it varies cichlid to cichlid, tank to tank, etc) severums have been quite mellow and not messed with anyone.

55gal is a nice sized tank, but its pretty narrow so there isn't a whole lot of swimming space, but there are a few choices. One thing that was suggested was firemouths. Could do some acaras, or what about another Severum? Possibly a dwarf pike. If it were me i'd go towards a pair of Severum, possibly to attempt to breed them.

I'd look for anything in the mid size range (Larger then dwarfs but smaller then tank busters like JDs, red devils, etc) and simi-aggressive.

IME when dealing with larger SA fish like Severums and Oscars a 55 really isn't large enough. An example of this would be that myself and a Friend both bought Severums from the same store the same day. Mine where put into my 90 hers was put into a 55. 1 and 1/2 yrs go by and my guys are full grown where hers were only about half the size of mine if that. Feedings and water temps were the same.

My severum also does not grow much. When I go to Aquariums and see full-grown severums I see that severums need larger tanks even if they are medium sized cichlids.
Jack Dempsey feels great in 55g but I can envision how he would feel in 90g - greater than great.
I must admit that 55 g tank is very small. I think 55 g is very good for tropical community but for most cichlids it is not enough except maybe for convicts and firemouths.

I'm still up in the air totally on that issue.

Granted, if you put a fish that grows to 3ft in a 10gal tank....sure its going to stunt its growth no matter how many WCs you do....or stress itself to death first.

But for a Severum type fish in a 55galish tank....ehh idk personally. With ample WCs i don't see any problems.
