I've been promised a new (and finally decent sized) tank in the spring. It'll likely be 30 to 39 gallons and I'm looking at either German Blue or Bolivian Rams.

I want to start planning now before purchasing so that I'm sure everything is done properly for them so I have questions and welcome any information anyone has on these fish.

1. Is 30 to 40G okay for these fish and if so how many? (I know they pair up so I'll need even number)

2. Who would be ideal tank mates for these peaceful little guys?

3. Anything specific to this guys I should know?

And now I've looked into it more and they're so colorful but fickle little buggers aren't they?

Would Cockatoos or Kribs be easier for a new cichlid keeper? Sooo many choices!

I think you'd be fine with any of the above -- as long as you keep up with water changes, either kind of ram should be fine.

If you get the kribs, though, I wouldn't put much else in the tank. They sometimes beat up on tankmates when they start breeding -- and they will breed.
