there have been so many different stocking rules i have come across online and in books--

for my 29 gallon:
- one Coral Beauty Pygmy Angel
- one Yellow Watchman Goby
- two Ocellaris Clownfish
depending on what is on my live rock:
- possibly a Sand Sifting Star if i gain experience (added after probably 6 or months)
- a handful of various snails and hermit crabs (4 Turbo Snails and/or 3 Dwarf Tipped Red Hermit Crabs), if not on live rock
is the tank overstocked? i'll have filtration that can handle a 50 gallon tank (HOT Magnum Canister with a Biowheel)

No that should be fine. I just got a 6 line wrasse and can fully recommend that for a tank of that size. Maybe stock

Give the tank 2 or 3 months to 'cycle' and then mature, then add fish at the rate of one of the above once a month.
Don't think that a tank has finished maturing just because the nitrogen cycle you can test for has finished.
Forget the bioweel and use the cannister with a spraybar return for circulation only. Liverock and sand for biofiltration will be the way to go
