Whenever I do my weekly changes in my 20 galon I dump the fresh water in with a bucket as slow as I can. This still makes everything below go crazy and my water sprite goes all over the place. So what I was thinking was using a small siphon to transfer the water back in. It may take longer but it seems this would be less stressful to the fish. Anyone have any good ways to put water back in after a change?

If you are worried about the gravel being spread about by the water flow, all you have to do is put a bowl of some kind (as long as it's not metallic) down in the tank and pour your water into it. This will stop the gravel from going everywhere. I think it still may blow plants and other things around though.

Since you have a smaller tank (20g) You can probably fill you tank up with gallon or 2 gallon jugs. Instead of using a big bucket(if thats what your doing) It shouldn't take to long (like if you had, say a 55g) With a smaller container you could really control the flow of water and have less spills!

It's a 20 gallon tank so you're only changing only one or two 2 gallon buckets right?
With my 20 gallon, I add the first gallon of water from the bucket with a pint glass to minimise the distrubance and stress, I then add the secong gallon slooooowwwwwlllllyyy from the bucket.

If you can't control the pour very well then I would do as AmazonTankz says and place a bowl or saucer on the substrate and pour over that.

If you want to syphon back into the tank from a bucket then the bucket has to be above the tank - got a step laddder? This all sounds a lot more fuss than just using a bucket or glass though.
