Hey guys/girls it has been a while since I got on myfishtank. Last time I remember wanting to get a cichlid tank that I never was able to make due an injury I'm still dealing with. Anyways, I was wondering if I can add any peaceful cichlids to my freshwater tank? About a month ago I remember adding two Angels. Bad idea since the next morning fish were nipping at them.

Hi Rams and Kribs are both in their own right great fish but should not be kept together first they are not from same continant and water requirements are not the same and kribs are more agressive than rams. Rams are some of the most peaceful of cichlids you can have 2 pr in a 20 gal or larger. Also you may want to consider apistogrammas there are many species that will coexist with Rams agassizii, trifasciata, cacatuoides, are a few of the more readly available apistos around. I wouldn't mix rams and kribs.

Rams and kribs are from different places, but kribs are a riverine species and the water is somewhat similar to some SA environments. No where near anything like the rift lake cichlids. Also many times people use kribs in planted tanks. I would be much more worried about giveing enough space to both dwarves when it came breeding time. So with the right space I don't personaly see anything wrong with mixing them. (other than the purist in me ;) )

Thanks for the help, I like that GBR. I went to a few stores in my chicago and near suburbs that are know to be big on fish and nothing. I found bolivian but they did not look to healthy. The kribs are hard to find too, every place I went they said we dont carry them anymore. At one store I did see a bunch of cheap baby cichlid's. They were not for sale, but I asked the guy I'll buy some at my own risk. Purchased a baby electric yellow, and what looks to be an albino peacock?? Can tell very clear?? Well got them for a buck each (NICE!) and they are about a 1/2 inch in size maybe less. I like the African fish, therefore I know it's a noob question but are GBR or Kribs African? Thanks

GBRs come from South America and Kribs (from my research) are from Cameroon/Nigeria region of Africa. Neither of these species of fish are what are typically referred to as "Africans." Those mostly come from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi.

Your "Electric Yellow" is most likely a Malawi fish, what we call African mbuna (rock dweller)---Labidochromis caeruleus
Peacocks I believe also come from Malawi but aren't considered true "mbuna"-- that's from Wikipedia, not sure if it's true. ;)

What I do know is that electric yellow cichlids are not "peaceful" cichlids, especially compared to some of those long finned community fish you have in your tank. (platys mollies and guppies) I think you may have some issues with this as the fish matures and becomes more territorial. I've heard rumors of elect. yellows being ok in community tanks, but I'm not sure I can picture that in my head as my elect. yellows are pretty fiesty.

Good luck and keep us updated. ;)

So do rock dweller fish stay around rocks a lot? I've noticed mine loves to sneak in creaks of the little rock mountain I have. Mine are pretty small at the time, and have a hard time in the tank. If anyone picks on anybody it's my female bettas. It's basically them who decides who comes in the tank. No joke but they even put fear in the gouramis, who would be the second ones that love to nip. Any other cichlid I can add from Lake Malawi?

To tell you the truth i wouldn't put any africans apart from MAYBE kribs in that tank. Those tankmates are not even close to good.

If those africans do get fully grown, and thats if because who knows what the gouramis and bettas can do to them at a small size, then the africans have the potential to kill everything in that tank.

Not good tankmates. So no, no more Malawi fish....and i'd personally take those new 2 out.
