Ok I want to change my 55 gallon tank into a angelfish tank. I have not had an air pump until today. I just bought the Tetra Whisper and hooked it up with just an air stone. Do angelish need more bubbles or no bubbles at all which then would make this purchase silly.

Thanks

probably a silly purchase , bubbles in the water doesn't equal oxygen in water , still has some aesthetic properties tho a .
aeration can be achieved through slight agitation on the surface no need for Niagra or loads of bubbles

cheers

When i had angelfish i had no airation save the filter circulating air and they did very well, actually they did so well i had to trade them in at the petstore because the got to large and aggressive for the rest of the fish in the tank.. if you want to use bubbles for decorating then i dont think it would affect the fish. they might even play in the bubbles. but to my knowledge not neccessary for angels.

If your fish are gasping at the surface of the water this will tell you that you do not have enough disolved oxygen in the water.

Air stones actualy do very little to add oxygen into the water. They create surface movement, and this is where the gas exchange takes place. Most of the time the outlet of the filter is enough to provide air for the tank except for some species of fish.

A long about way of saying it, but angles will be just fine without it.

Airstones and airpumps are useful to have around. If you're medicating, it's a good idea to use them. You can also use them for sponge filters for fry tanks, for a brine shrimp hatching system, for angelfish eggs you're raising away from the parents, etc. I don't have airstones in most of my tanks, but I have been glad to have them around on several occasions.

I've got an airstone with my angels, but then again all my tanks are deep :(. Unless it is a really deep tank, or you've got some really oxygen demanding species (not angels), the airstones are mostly decorative.

Deff decorative, i like the bubble walls in my tanks. My apple snail rides my bubble wall to the top 5 times a day and glides slowly back to the bottom, lol. So someone in my tank enjoys it.

so the flow from the filter will provide enough oxygen into the water? I really thought the air stone would help that process. The fish aren't gasping for air at the top they seem fine.
