African Dwarf Frogs!

Hi guys! Did you miss me? I've been busy lately (and I also just discovered tumblr ) so I haven't been on at all in quite a while!

So, news... I have an internship at a zoo this summer, and one day a week (of 4 that I'll be there) I'll be working in their aquarium which has 3,000 fish! I'll also be assisting with reptiles and ponds (includes monkeys, birds, and carnivores) on different days :D:D:D.

Other, relevant to this forum news... I've decided to get African Dwarf Frogs! I'm going to get a 5 gallon tank (been talking to this guy, other options from Phoenix from your craigslist-fu are welcome), which I will be able to take to school with me next year as they have a 5gal limit in the dorms.

So... tips, advice, what do they eat? I'm thinking frog bites and bloodworms? Are the worms 100% necessary? What do they smell like? Tips to reduce smell around things they touch? I have a small freezer in my dorm. Will they need to be target-fed if they are the only "fish" in the tank (besides possibly red cherry shrimp)?

You guys are the best! Glad to be back :D

They need live foods! Bloodworms are a must! Id stick to live foods and if you only have RCS in with them you want need to target feed. Id get at least 2-3, they love to be with other ADF's. Provide them with a hiding spot. And dont forget now, they need live foods. Chopped up earthworm bits will work also. :D good luck

If they are the only things in the tank besides shrimp, you don't HAVE to target feed them. They have poor eye sight, that's why it's suggested to target feed. Mine, as most, since they have poor eye sight smell out the food, as soon as blood worms went into the water the ADFS would dart out, so as long as they are accessible. I felt that it was important to keep the ADFs active and hunting for food, I didn't want to condition them to only wait for target-feeding in order to obtain their food source.

My ADFS love frozen bloodworms. They really don't smell at all. I also feed them spirulina brine shrimp (these do have quite a strong odor) - mine absolutely refused to touch pellets. I target feed a bit, but let quite a bit of the food drop to the floor of the tank, which they then go hunting for . . . .

RiseAbove! You're back! The other day I was wondering why a lot of people where so inactive on here. I guess we all go cycles, with us one week being obsessed with MFT, and the next week not going on at all
