For a salt water tank with a sand bottom is a air pump with an airstone needed? I guess, i
m just wondering if a air pump is needed for a salt water tank.

Definitely no, it's not needed and most SW people wouldn't use airstones because it's not very natural looking. For water movement/ surface agitation you would use powerheads (among other reasons).

i use one during the hot summer..the pump is next to the air conditioner's output so it can cool the water a little bit. The rest of the time it's not used.
