I have recently had an algae bloom in my 55gal cichlad tank. The tank is over lit but that has never been a problem before. As far as filtration I have a fluval 304 and 104 with a power head for circulation. Ph/Hardness/Nitriates/Amonia are all within limits. Any suggestions?

Algae is great for cichlids. You can leave it in and let them eat it, and then just clean the front glass. However if it really gets out of hand start turning your light on later, and turning it off sooner. 8)

Ummm...it's great for some cichlids (Mbunas in particualr), but there are quite a few species who only eat meat.

What are your nutrient levels like (phosphate in particular). Algal blooms are often caused by excess nutrients. Shortening your lighting cycle will help, so will more water changes. Most everyone has to deal with algae at one time or another, good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to pick up a few Pseudotropheus socolofi this weekend. If anyone has a common name for this species I would love to hear it. I also will cut the lighting down a few hours.
