Has anyone here had any experience with plastic scraping blades for cleaning algae. I've never used them, I've always used the sponge on a stick. But when I had sand it would scratch the glass from time to time, so I stopped using it. So now that I'm doing salt, I've got sand again. So just wondering if those plastic scrapers actually work and do they scratch at all?

when having a SW tank you should know to not go too close to the sand with your algae magnet. even something like a mag float would work for your big tank. there is also the nano mag but its more suited for pico tanks. at the sand line i recommend a razor blade so that you never get sand between a magnet cleaner and the glass.

btw you always will run the risk of scratching your glass. you just need to be very careful.

I use the sponge/scotch-brite on a stick as well, and use a credit card to scrape the really tough stuff. I just tried a small plastic dollar store window squeegee, thinking that would work. No go. Something along the lines of a credit card works really well. It's just a arm soaking, mess. Plus side is it keeps the VISA away from the darling bride (kidding).

I'm afraid to use a razor in the event you cut into the silicone.

a razor blade is the most effective. i use it on curved glass areas, definitely away from silicone. just be careful around silicone edges and you'll be fine. the metal of a razor blade has no harmful chemicals for a reef. also rust is not harmful for a reef (in case your forceps rust or something.)

the ravor blades i use have a titanium coated edge as well so they do not corrode and rust due to the water. they also have a handle about a foot long or so on them. as newman said though you have to stay away from the edges to avoid hitting the silicone. this is the style i have but mine is 7 inches and this one is 4. Amazon.com: Zinsser 98014 4-Inch Long-Handle Scraper Tool: Home Improvement they really are a handy tool to have for cleaning glass.

you can use it for pretty much any scraping need you could have around the house. I've used it to clean the stove cook top since it's electric with a solid piece of glass on top. it's just a handy tool to have.
