do i have to shell out my precious dollars for an algae scrubber ($4 is too much to pay) or can i just buy one of those cheap sponges at the grocery store to use on my tank? if i can, does it matter if the tank is glass or acrylic?

I wouldn't use any kind of scrubber on an acrylic tank, only a soft sponge.

I have used a dish sponge/scrubber in my tanks, and it works pretty well. Just make sure it has never been used and rinse it well. Credit cards are good for getting green spot algae off, but I wouldn't use that on acrylic either.

If you get some money together eventually, the Mag-Floats are great, but cost about $10.

the credit card thing it a good idea. I never thought of that.
It's not like I can use it for anything else (maxed out) grumble.
other wise I just use plastic potscrubbies but I give them a good rinse first.
I have no experience with acrylic tanks so I can't comment on those. I have scratched glass before but that was because there was some sand or grit in the potscrubbie.
