Ok we just did a partial water change in our new tank. The nice honey color is starting to fade from the tannins in the tank. Since our water is pretty hard the ph never really dropped which I was glad of. Anywho, while removing the old water and moving stuff around a bit we found these little alien looking things. I am guessing that they are some sort of fungus but thought I would ask to be certain. They are mainly under the driftwood, and have what looks like a small seed in the center surrounded by what looks like white fluff. Does anyone know what they are and if they are harmful???

Thanks!

Lol aliens, thats funny. No what I think u are looking at is a type of fungus. I once bought a few slate rocks from my lfs and when i got home and inspected them further I noticed that one had some white spots on it which looked like what u just described. I tried boiling it but it did not work so i just never used it. I could be wrong and it might be something more along the lines of whatfroggyfox21 said. However I would use caution and see if the white spots go away from the drift wood or whatnot. Since your tank seems to be at the start of the cycling process u might want to try adding a bit of anti fungal medication or try cleaning the white spots off the drift wood. Anyone else have a better idea of what the Aliens are? :)

I would have to agree with froggy in that it might be decaying food. If I drop a flake near the tank opening and let it sit, it gets white fluffy on it with the flake in the middle.
