All of my tanks are out of control HELP!

Ok, so I have a quarantine tank (about 5 or so gallons? It's definitely small than my ten gallon) set up that I put two new fish in. They've been in it for a few weeks now and had been being treated with Aquarasol just as a precaution. I put one of my sponge filters in as well as gravel, a heater, and a little plastic thingy they can hide in. Recently I've noticed then thrashing around alot and rubbing on the plastic thingy like they're itchy. The female has begun to chanse the male around very aggressively and seems very stressed out while the male rubs against the plastic thingy all the time and hides from the female. The male is white so it's hard for me to tell if he might have Ich and the female is black and orange so if it was there it would be easier to see. I haven't noticed any white spots that might indicate Ich but I do see very very tiny white bug things that are all over the tank. They're so tiny I almost didn't see them, but I found then today and am worried that they might be what's causing my fish to "itch." I'm worried cause I don't see any spots on their fins but I see those little white bugs.

I researched treatments and the one I'd prefer to go with is treating with aquarium salt, does anyone have any suggestions or tips to doing it properly? Or is it just a basic dosing of salt and raising the temp of the tank?

OK, next tank problem...

I have a 20 gallon high tank filled with 5 Platys (2 males 3 females) and the state of their tailfins is worrying me. I had another female platy that I had to get rid of cause her tail fin contracted a secondary infection from my frog and it looked like it was spreading. My prettiest male got this weird white, cottony -like spot on his tailfin while my other females tail fins began to look like they were fading at the back. They have this white/translucent patch on their tail fins that makes me think that their fins are fading...it could be from a loss of color from something else I guess but I'm not sure. Now one of my first female platys looks like her tail fin is sloping downward a bit, and she's been acting very unlike herself. She used to pal around with the other female I got first and be much more social in general, but now she sort of runs from everything and the other fish leave her alone as if she's sick and they know it.

I just don't know what to do, it feels like something is amiss but I just cannot put my finger on it. I've done two water changes and medicated with Aquarasol (then did another water change) and then medicated with Melafix for a week. One of the males got better but the tank still feels off to me, as if the fish aren't happy. I'm thinking that as not good as it might be to start an entirely new tank up I might do just that do get a better footing and eliminate variables that could be causing all these issues. I also wonder if the one male who had the white stuff on his tail might be way too aggressive and stressing my females out? He's scary aggressive and likes to gang up on one of my females while simultaneously chasing away the other male. He always has his fins flared out and struts around the tank.

There are so many more details I'm not mentioning because I would be here all night so I just put in the ones I thought were most important. Please feel free to ask me for more details if you feel so inclined. I need the help really badly right now...

Please help me!

Okay your QT has Ick. There's a treatment called coppersafe that will help with that but you're going to need a heater in there too. DO NOT move those fish out of the QT until the treatment is over.

Second tank though is going to need more information. Have you checked ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? How big is the tank and how long has it been set up? How often are your platys having babies?

Yes, as Tab said...use coppersafe on the QT tank. If you can get it treated while those little guys are still swimming around. You MAY catch them before they attach to your fish. I would continue treatment for another few weeks, to be on the safe side. Reada here for more info on ICH.

As far as your other tank, I would try to find some way to seperate the agressive fish. If all the problems go away when he's out of there...you have found your problem...I say start there.

Male live bearers will literally harass a female to death with breeding attempts. That's one of the reasons it's best to keep them seperate if you're not keeping them for breeding. And if you are it's suggested you keep at least 2 females to 1 male.
