Was browsing my local wal-mart, and boy did I stumble onto something.

I was in the light section looking at prices on under cabinets lights that we just bought to compare them to Home depots prices(was less at wal-mart).

I went by the utility lights, and I saw one that was a power compact florecent.

Here is what the box reads.
"Lights of America"
-Up to 500W Light output(uses only 65 watts)
-Provides 8,255 Brightness Lumens of Light output...Uses only 65 watts.
-Safe cool operation-no heat(max temp is 98f)(it doesn't get too hot..for real)
-White bright light
-Full spectrum-color corrected(added blue I believe ,which is ok)
There are some other things as well like outlast 13 halogens, so I picked one up for $24 and said , if it don't look good, I will just use it for painting , working, ect.

Well I plugged it in, and WOW! was it as bright as a halide almost. So I unscrewed the bar that it has for a handle, and set it on one half of my 29 gallon planted. It was so bright.

It fit perfectly on my 29 gallon, it could have fit 3 across or 2 behind my dual strip florescent hood.

I went out tonight and picked up 2 more.

Until I make my canopy for them on the 55 gallon, I had to put them on my glass hood(the light is also enclosed, so the glass is just to hold them up, not to prevent them getting wet)

I kept my twin 80 watt shop light on the front, and put three across the back of my 55 gallon planted.

I turned on the timer, and ta-da!!! It was so bright !

I love it. $74 for three is a great deal. I could fit 3 more easily on my 55 gallon hood.Even three is super bright, I couldn't imagine 6 of them.

The great thing about wal-mart is..you don't like it?...return it.

Please go check this out!
Red plants..here I come!

hey thats just what i need!  U say utility lights, like automotive???  Do you have to build a hood for them, cuz i have a single 36 inch on my 50gal and it has a folding glass top with just a fluro strip light on it.  Sounds good to me though!  Now i can grow plants!!!!

Guys , so far it is simply amazing what these suckers are doing.

One day, and my plants responded. The green spot and slight algae on them is gone.

Every plant is pearling , it is like a 1000 airstones in there.

The fish don't seam to mind, and they look real nice with the light.

My wife says that is enough for now, so My 29 gallon has to wait. I plan on two more for that tank. three along with the dual shoplight is perfect. It used to be the brightest tank, now it looks so dim!

CO2 will be a must for anyone using these. Extra ferts will most likely be an issue as well. I have 3 2liter DIY CO2s on the 55 gallon. I need to take a measurement, and see if a 4th is needed.

Oh, riddlephil

They were near the ceiling fans, there were utility lights there such as the halogen ones you may use to paint or work at night.

You remove the piece attached already to the light, and most likely just set it on top of your glass. They actually fit without glass on my tanks, but their glass/plastic shields stick out some, so you need to raise them a little to have them not be in your tank too close to the water. If you go look at them, you will see what I mean.

I used it for 6 months before it burned out.  Seems like the enclosure gets really hot and maybe shortcircuited.  That's why you see it used outdoors as flood lights.

Was good but long term problems?

The model # is 9266.

This is the lighting that some reefers use for their refugium.

It looks like dattack's link, only all white inside and out.

model number is 6065 white.

Has a two year warrenty, so if it short circuits..you get another.

another day..and it is kicking butt with my plants. The dual shop light thing is now history. I could never go back to it.

This is my answer...but if it isn't for you...Power compacts of ahsupply and other places must be so worth it.

What ??? the heck are you talking about? :-/

I looked at that site, and found only this thread

http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=f9db084c35d681a45bda0195dd372278&threadid=89330

I think only one person named "Guy" has the same model as this one.

I am buying 4 more for all the other tanks next paycheck. I love these things.

I bought 2 27W Lights of America Flourescent Flood Lights (model 9027 Bronze) at HomeDepot and used those for about 2 weeks and the plants did respond well. My previous setup was 3 15-watt T8s. After 2 weeks of operation I replaced the bulbs with a pair of (rather expensive: ~$25/each) 6700K Custom Seal Life Bulbs, but noticed NO difference from the bulbs the fixtures came with.

I come to find out that in their indoor Power Compacts LoA uses 2700K bulbs, but in their outdoor models they use 6500K bulbswith a CRI of 84, which HomeDepot sells for $5.95/each (D'oh). Those lamps are labled with their "FloureX Technology" FYI. This particular model uses 6" linear quad lamps and are VERY bright.

Overall I'm VERY satisfied with this setup and I saved at least $100 over a retail dual lamp fixture.

Okay here is my question. I found these work utility light thingies. But all I can find is halegon(spelt wrong I know)!
Is this okay. Problem is I live in the land of non-compact lighting, so I probably won't see these things for about 2 years lol.

Thanks
Craig
