All mfrs. say their pumps are quiet. But "quiet" is a relative term. I find Rena's are "quiet" and a good buy for the money. I would recommend that whatever pump you get that you set it on a sponge pad. This will help deaden some of the sound.

As to whether or not you can get too much air in your tank ... I don't think so. But you can get a lot of turbulence. Not particularly quieting for the fish. But most of those ornaments don't put out gobs of bubbles...plus you can adjust the airflow to them.

Must admit I have a friend much like you that likes those "knick-knacks" as she calls them. Some of them are quite unusual and I am ALMOST tempted...Good luck.

I would also recommend a Rena for it's quietness, but most any pump will last you atleast 2yrs.

You can have too much air, but that's easily alleviated by buying a little valve to vent excess air. That will give you the flexibility of controlling how much air you want pumped into your tank.
