Maybe I'm overthinking things a little too much here, but...

I've read conflicting information pertaining to the diet of angelfish...some saying omnivore, some saying carnivore...So which is it, and does it really matter?

For instance, if carnivores are habitually offered 'plant matter' (i.e. the veggie portion of mixed tropical flake food), would it be at all harmful to them in the long-run?

I'm sure many folks get by on feeding them mixed offerings that include veggie and meaty foods, but I'm still interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on whether or not these guys are carnivores or omnivores.

Thanks!

I feed mine flake and frozen foods such as bloodworks brine shrimp and frozen veggies by SF bay hatchery. They never miss the chance to pick off the feeder guppies that I put in the tank for them. They also eat the Algea waffer I add for my bottom feeders. I really dont think that they are really picky.

Hes not asking what they will eat but what they should get. Like what balance of veggies and maets. For example: If my Royal Pleco gets too much protien it causes bloat. So I think that he is trying to find out what the best mix is. Right?? I found this: (scroll down for diet) Feeding A Angelfish

Most fish do well on a well balanced diet. But yes, if you feed a fish (or any animal) to much of something they don't need it can cause problems. Same as if you don't feed them something they do need.

I think a mixed diet is good. They seem to grow fast and breed well when they get regular bloodworms, IME. I usually feed mine bloodworms 4 or 5 times a week, and they have always been pretty healthy, and most of my pairs have laid eggs every two weeks on this kind of diet. Mine get flake on other feedings.

Yes, FishGeek...that's exactly what I was trying to find out!

Based on what I've read and people's comments, it sounds like a well-balanced diet will yield the best results. I'll plan on continuing a primarily frozen bloodworm diet supplemented with flakes (which is how I've been feeding him so far). I feed shrimp pellets occasionally as well.

I may pick up some frozen beefheart too---for the occasional treat.

Thanks everyone.

I feed Bloodworms (I have frozen and freeze dried)4-5 days a week and then the other days I rotate with Daphnia, Emerald Entre, Tubliflex Worms (again frozen and freeze dried), Mosquito Larvae, Mysis Shrimp and occassionally freeze dried Brine Shrimp. Honestly I dont feed flake. O and I do have Spirulina Wafers, Shrimp Pellets, Algae Wafers, and Variety Wafers, which I mix up with the other feedings.
