Hi, all

One of my marble angelfish has spawned on a broad-leafed plant. I know that they are angelfish eggs because there are two angelfish defending them viciously. I have a couple of questions:
- Some of the eggs are tranparent, others are white - which are the fertilised eggs?
- Is it normal for both parents to defend the eggs?
- How long before the eggs hatch?
- Is it likely that the fry will survive in a community tank? (probably not).

Thanks.

If you have Two fish defending them.. they would be the parents.. the white eggs are Rotting and creating Fungus that will kill the Transparent Fertile eggs.. if you can take something and pick the white eggs off the leaf.. and as far as them actually hatching in the community tank is pretty slim.. what I do is take the leaf out of the tank and put it in a 2-5 gallon tank with an airstone for plenty of circulation.. kinda under the leaf but as to where its not Ripping the eggs of the leaf.. and it is Normal for them both to defend the eggs.. you will notice one of them usually the male I seen fanning water past the eggs for ciculation to keep fresh oxygen rich water to the eggs.. Eggs should form into wigglers "if Fertile" within 5 days atleast.. If you decide to put these eggs in there own tank.. treat the water with MarOxy to help in preventing Fungus infection as this will be a sure kill for any survivers.. I hope this post helped you as its all from my personal experience in raising Angefish Fry.. if any more questions.. feel free to ask..

Thanks for the advice, Volitan. I thought that the white eggs were the fertilised ones. I would have thrown the good eggs away *crazysmil

I don't have a separate tank, but i will attempt to put them in one of those breeding nets in the main tank. I'm really keen to raise the fry. :D

If you don't have a spare tank to put the eggs, where are you going to put the 100 or so offspring that will result from a spawn? Breeding net wont be of much use...

When it gets back up and running (last I checked (this morning) it was still down; still issues from the italian earthquake) see : http://www.awforum.net/angelfish/ This is "The Angelfish Society" 's forum. go to http://www.angelsplus.com for some good information on breeding/rearing angelfish..

Get a few ten gallons.. ;) thats all I did.. they are very cheap new.. and a heater for them each isnt much either.. I just use them sponge air driven filters.. and put like 20-30 fry in each tank as they get bigger.. once they are around quarter size.. you should be able to sell them to the local Fish Store... or you can look in the local paper for something around 40-60 gallon tanks used.. you should never pay more then a dollar per gallon on a used tank.. unless it acrylic or some specialty tank or includes a stand and extras..
