I tend to buy fish I deem compatible that are on sale. I am in this for pleasure and not to breed, but it is becoming apparent that I must be buying fish that in the canine world would be called “mutts” - particularly the angels and bettas. When I try to research I come up with things like - alleles, genetics, etc. Is there no simple way of describing these fish or is it just opinion? Take “Cambodian” for instance. It says in one place they have light colored bodies with red fins, but then they show pictures of purple, green and blue ones. And to add to it, how do you describe the fins - there must be dozens of different combinations and adjectives. “Crown” and “spike” don’t look that much different to me. One of the bettas I have that I have described as “copper” I guess is actually chocolate, but I have never seen “chocolate” that color. (He is beautiful, but I guess I don’t know what kind he is.)

Angels are the same. Someone posted a picture of a “jet black angel” but jet black always meant black to me. I could clearly see the gray stripes on it. I did find there are some completely black angels, but there are also some with stripes referred to as jet black. On the other hand, there is an assortment of black and gray or silver stripes all with different names - and from there is goes to dozens of patterns and names, some of which don’t look all that different to me. I have one angel that is definitely striped on one side and marble on the other - I guess he really is a mutt. Two of the angels look “traditional” to me, but that’s not an option. Then I am suppose to decided whether they are silver, grey, smoky or pearl. I have a koi, I guess, but his fins are completely different and I have yet to find any description of fins. And I have another one that is maybe gold fading to silver, or pearl or white - another mutt?

There are a lot of pretty pictures out there, but the more I look and the more I read and compare the more confused I get.

I know you are just using examples, but...
Cambodian: White or light pink body with dark fins. Most common example has red fins. (red loss plays a role in that)

Spike tail: Never heard of it. Likely another name for a crowntail. There are some types though for example, a halfsun. Halfmoon and crowntail cross, that can look very similar to a common halfmoon or crowntail.

About the chocolate: That is where a pic is needed. . .go to ultimatebettas.com (I hate recommending forums on another forum...anyway!)...post a pic of the chocolate/copper boy and they will tell you exactly what he is. Any questions you have can be answered there too. :) (I bet they could even tell you about your angel. :p)

It is confusing at first- but the more good information you read, the more it starts to make sense.

Thanks! I did check that forum and of course I haven't had time to get in depth on it, but it sounds like they have differences too in how they identify who's who and what it what. In the meantime I found a pretty decent book that I already owned on bettas that has some of the info I was look for, but it too, sounds like the breeders are continuously changing and coming up with new varieties of bettas.

i like my mutts...lol. i dont care what it is as long as it doesnt kill my other fish :) theres too much inbreeding ect going on to create something new. i tried keeping up with discus variations and OMG...but new name=higher price! even if its the same thing as the 5$ betta, theyll sell it for 10$. its all about money it seems, wth fish, animals, ect.

chocolate...i beleive they meant caramel? mm...makes me kinda want a rolo

just for fun i thought id learn some rabbit genetics. those make more sense than fish genetics for sure.

it's similar to what is going on with dogs now, and what goes on all the time in the reptile community. It's just that, the newer the name, the more the money, especially if you say it's "rare"... it drives me nuts sometimes...

You better share that rolo fuzz!! Lol I just got my new betta. I don't know what you would call him. He's red with his fins going transparent towards the ends and a fine black line on the tips. Here's a few pictures.
