I'm in the process of setting up a 33 gallon community tank, and have a few questions about sand.

I have 40lbs of natural ZooMed Reptisand. Very fine coarseness.

Would this be okay for a planted tank? Or would it be too fine?

Also, how easy is sand to keep clean? I dont mind doing a bit of work to make it look great.

Thanks.

Im not familiar with your choice of sand.

But to clean sand, you just use your gravel vacuum... stick both hands in the tank and with one hand stir up the sand, with the other use the vac to suck up the cloud. if the sand is course you can suck the sand up into the gravel vac than pinch/squeeze the the hose before it gets sucked past the vac tube. when pinched it slows the flow and the sand falls back down.

On the bag, it's described as "Very fine quartz desert sand".

It's about the same consistency of what you would find at the beach.
Beaches are different ;-)
Make sure it's not like dust.
If not - it's ok.

And there's no need to put BOTH hands in tank. You scare fish ;-) Just buy gravel cleaner with diagonal cut nose. You'll be able to touch upper layer of sand and suck dirt the same time. With NO hands in water ;-)

I have some reptisand, but I dont think it was made by zoomed. One thing to remeber is that the sand used for reptiles clumps when it gets wet. I have thought about putting it into an aquarium, but when I put some into a bowl and poured water in it it looked terible. It would not settle out to the bottom for anything.

You could try it, just use a bucket or a bowl and see how it does for you.
