Anyone know anything about Regent HOB filters?

I just picked up a used 55 gallon aquarium with a Regent filter. It has no media, and I cannot find any information on the brand. The person that I got it from said that the filter worked when she last used it, but had upgraded to a Penguin and was currently using that with her new Bowfront tank.

My question is this:

Would I be better off just getting a Penguin 350 at Big Al's for $28.00 + shipping, or can I even find filter media to fit the Regent filter?

If it is any help, the filter has a sticker on it that say's to use #3 filters. That would be great if I could find anything like that.

On a side note, the tank also has a rather old looking heater. The previous owner again claims that the heater works just fine, but I can hear something rattling around in it when I move it around. There are no obvious cracks in the glass that I can see. I was thinking of filling the the tank, setting the heater, and seeing how it works for a bit prior to adding fish. Any one see a flaw to this plan?

Regent filters are made by Marineland exclusively for Wal-Mart. You should be able to use Marineland filter cartridges in it.

I belive the #3 is the Wal-Mart size, but I'm not too sure which Marineland size it corresponds to (they're with letters).

I think it's a great idea to test that heater before you use it with fish in the tank. If you're worried about it cracking in the tank, you could test it in a bucket.

If it were me, I'd spend the money on a heater, not a new filter. :)
