i used standard 40 watt, 4 foot shop lights that you can buy at hardware stores like home-depot. they are the same length as the 75 and 55 gallon tanks. i hung 4 of them over my 75 gallon giving me 160 watts. its a pretty cheap way to go, i don't remember how much i spent but i would bet it was less than $75 -$100 for the shop lights and the bulbs. home-depot always sells plant growing bulbs for a pretty good price.

i just checked the home-depot webpage. you can buy the strip light fixtures that hold 2 4-foot bulbs for $13 a piece and the bulbs are around $10.

two fixtures = $26
4 bulbs = $40
total = $66

not including taxes and costs to hang them or build a hood, which ever you wanted to do. another cost might be to add some kind of reflector to focus the light into the tank.

you can also try ah supply, they offer lighting supplys for aquariums but you have to configure the canopy yourself.they have good prices,not as cheap as the home depot ideas(thats what i use )but cheaper than any one of the big name companys(jbj,hamiltons etc.)thats my next stop when i save up enough.you can check them out at www.ahsupply.com i hope thats right
