The AP (college-level) Biology students at my high school were given an assignment. They must keep two fish, a white cloud and an algae eater (not sure what species) alive in a contained ecosystem in a 1 gallon, unfiltered tank. They aren't allowed to change the water, add a filter, or add anything to the water. It's impossible to create a self-contained ecosystem in a tiny tank, let alone a 1 gallon, which isn't suitable for any fish whatsoever, not even a betta. My friend is upset because her fish is dying, and it's no wonder. I wonder about the teacher of this class. I can't believe he actually assigned his students to subject fish to improper living conditions.

this is not a part of regular AP biology curriculum. a real nice idea, but 1 gallon is entirely too small to do this. talk to your professor. if you are taking his class, he should be your friend (at least by now, its been around 1 month already), he should be able to understand what you're upset about.
Suggest an alternative to keeping fish in this ecosystem. something like snails, FW shrimp or some smaller organisms. NOT fish. If your teacher knows biology,he is familiar with ethics and he should not be doing this in this way.

I would complain to the Board of Ed. In fact what school district, I'll do it!
Hempfield Area High School in PA. I'll have to find a means of contacting the board anonymously. I don't know who the teacher is at all.
There are "a lot of plants", according to my friend. I do not take the class, so I'm only hearing from my friend. I'm not sure how long they have to keep the fish alive, but regardless, it's still cruel. And who knows what will happen to the fish after the project? Snails or a shrimp would be a much better idea, but still...

you cant just go to the teacher and explain what you think? what about the principal? try those first and then if you cant then maybe you can somehow directly contact the board members.

well ask your friend who's doing the project. she will gladly take you to her professor if you want to see him. I'd talk to him in person. see what he has to say about it, and tell him what you have to say.
