Well, I would think a 280 would be sufficient in a moderately stocked 55 gallon. If you had cichlids or otherwise heavy fish load, I'd suggest 2 280's,,, for redundancy

That being said

I also agree that the Aquaclear 300 is a bit better at mechanical filtration than the 280... the sponge real estate is a bit bigger but you don't get as much biological (no wheel).

In the end both are very good filters and either one would be fine for the 55

I guess the next question is, what is going in this thing? plants? tetras? massive cichlids?

emperors make alot of surfae movement making them not good for planted tanks and good for big fish, where in my experience aquaclears make alot less surface movement so co2 doesnt dissipate as bad, but if you are doing an unplanted id go with 2 emepror 280s or 1 emperor 400

my tank has and it will have plants in the far future so i guess i will go with the aquaclear 300. but i might just fill the tank in the far future with fake plants and ill get the emperor280. i will get both filters and use them both at the same time and change if i get real plants or fake plants. i will first get the aquaclear because im short in money and if both do the same thing so it wont matter. Thank you everyone for all your help. it has helped me a lot.

I have never owned a aquaclear, but I believe the
mechnical and biological filtration is done by the same
sponge.... I wouldn't care for that. I like changing the
mechnical filter on the emperors without distrubing
the biological bed.....

Now, I would be interested in the Aquaclear 500
for its mechnical filtration..... wonder how it compares
to the emperor 400. I have a heavily loaded 150 gallon
catfish tank that I have 2 emperors on which I change
the mechnical filters every 3 or 4 days.... (homemade
from the media baskets)..... would a AC 500 be a
better mechnical filter than an emp 400?

Also, while reading user reviews I hear some ppl mention
about aquaclears overflowing on the floor.

ACs Are great filters. I have one on all my tanks. I swear by them. Cleaning the sponge in a bucket of water that you pulled out of your tank during a water change will keep you from losing your biological colony in the filter if thats what your worried about. I don't even do that I rinse mine out under the tap and replace it. The filter will tell you when it needs cleaning. The basket will push up the lid on the sponge side. I only have to clean mine like once every 2 months or so. They are a relitively cheap filter and are cheap to maintain. don't knock them until you try them.

kinda looks like a mix between a salamander and an eel, they just have 2 short arms up front and a long tale, they can walk out of water also, we have to put rocks ontop the the glass hood so he cant lift it open and escape, id love to get one for myself hes very cool, when im cleaning the tank he swims right up and even sticks his head out of the water and makes noises at me and rubs against my arm

I always wondered what those things were called. We used to catch them when we were fishing for catfish in the early evening. They put up a hell of a fight. We just thought they were eels of some sort and throw them back. They do get huge, the ones we used to catch were anywhere between 2 and 3 foot and as thick as your arm.

I would put a emperor 280 on one side of the tank and a aquaclear 300 on the other. A 55G is a fairly long tank. On my 55G I started out with a penguin 330 on just one side, but it didn't do a good enough job so I added a filstar xp1 cannister on it. much better after that. It is a planted tank too.

Look them up on the web. Threr are actually a few dealers. But I would go with the Dwarf Siren. They only get about 8 inches I think. They are closely related to the Water Dog. The info I got on the dwarf was that they would do fine in a peaceful community tank and like a pH of 7.0. But as you know that information on the web can be in error.
