I bought a group of my first Danios, but forgot to ask my LFS if they were topwater fish, they dont seem to want to leave the very surface of the water. They are very active fish, they were hard to check for desease in the LFS tank, had to put them in a very small specimin tank to check.

my danios pretty much think they own the whole tank. they swim all over, and fast too :)
Maybe they are oxygen starved? have you checked your water parameters? maybe something there is bothering them.

My tank is very healthy and the fish have plenty of air, Ive got my emperor 280, UGF, plus a bubble wall, i doubt my fish are air starved. Maybe they are still getting used to the new tank, so we'll see, I was hoping theyd be mid to top water fish, my cardinals like the middle and the black neons like the top.

I have 5 leopards and 3 zebras in my 15 gallon hex...they are all over the tank. I love to watch them. They love to have tunnels to swim through and always go to the top of the tank when I'm in the room because they think I'm going to feed them. (and usually do)

BUT since you just got them I agree with dogsby to check and make sure your water has plenty of oxygen and none of the other parameters are screwy. Otherwise they're probably just getting used to the tank.

Where are you putting them?

yes danios are topswimming fish but it isn't unusual to find them where ever the food is.they are very active fish,so active that some fish will be constantly nervous around danios.try not to put shy, lethagric fish with danios.
