I was thinking about the idea of keeping an Arrowana of some sort, just 1, in a 100g.

What can you peeps tell me about them (any kind)?
Any perferred species?
Can you keep plants with it (swords, anubias, crypts)?
How 'bout tankmates?

And please don't tell me it will outgrow the tank, as I already know. An 8" fish will do just fine in a 100g for a year or better.

Thanks!

What am I going to do with it once it outgrows the tank?

Sell or give it away. If it's Asian, I will give it to the Dallas World Aquarium if they want it. They already have several HUGE arowanas, like 3 foot long!

I will give it to charity (museum, zoo, aquarium, etc.), but I will sell it to anyone who just wants it, providing they have the proper place for it to reside. It will NOT go to the LFS; that's homicide.

Err. Emm. I know you don't want me to tell you but if you keep this fish in good conditions it will outgrow the tank very quickly. My dad used to buy ones with yolk sacs and grow them to 18" in six months in a 240 gallon tank. Then he would trade them in for a new baby and store credit.
I hate to be the voice of opposition, but you better ask the museum if they will accept the fish before getting it. If they already have several they may not want another. In addition to this they may not want to take chances introducing new diseases into the museum tank.
Its just my opinion, but I think its wrong to assume someone will want someone elses full grown fish. Half the fun of owning fish is watching them grow. And after all You don't want it when its full grown so why would someone else. Also, there arn't many people with a tank big enough that don't already have it full of fish.

Ok, I know that you didn't want to hear any of this but I felt it was necessary to state for other's benifit. (And you knew someone was going do it!:p

The MFT watchdogs are out in full force I see ;)

Trust me, I have several ideas for the arowana once it gets too big, so puh-lease don't worry about that for me. It may end up in a pond (one of my own). I'd rather not give it away actually.

Anyone care to actually answer the original questions??? Preferably the tankmates question?

Ok, fish for a large tank with an arowana, I've got some ideas.
  • Large Plecos, Tinfoil Barbs or Pacu. You can sometimes get them real cheap because they've outgrown other peoples tanks.;)
  • Knifefish.
  • Sometimes oscars get along, sometimes they don't.
  • Large eels?
  • Bichir.
  • Large catfish for example albino channel cats or a redtail cat.
  • Small goldfish and guppies (though temporarily)
As for recomended types of arowana; You will probably be severly limited in your selection. I've only ever seen two different kinds. I've heard that aurtrailians are no longer available but I just saw one labeled as such a couple weeks ago.
Check out this site about dragonfish:http://dragonfish.com/ These bright red arowanas are apparently available but each come with their own CITES id number!
