my julidochromis dickfeldi have taken over my tank. the fry are out of control, and some of the older generations are getting a bit big for my liking. i'm about to contact a few lfs, but have zero experience in dealing with selling/trading with fish. what should i be asking for/what should a fair offer look like? i just don't want to get screwed.

I think I would look around at the LFS with the highest price of a fish similar to the one you are selling, and offer them the same price but minus some money so they can make a profit- maybe like 25-30%.

I'm not sure what the LFS there do, but here i think they "buy" them for like 1/3 of the selling price, which is just above wholesale or pretty darn close to it. I saw some at my LFS today, should of looked at the price for you.

Most likely most LFS are going to just give you store credit, which can be good or worthless depending on you.

Selling wise i'd be looking for $5-10 a fish, but thats straight up retail and what i'd sell them for. Thats not wholesale and probably not what the LFS is going to pay.

How fast do you need them gone? I'd just go to the LFS and talk with the owner and see what you can work out.

to be honest, any amount of money would be fine to me. i have plenty of fish to move, and will have more seeing as the breeding never seems to stop or slow down. in terms of a time period for this to get done: next couple weeks. the water parameters are all fine, so the amount of fish isn't a burden on the bacteria yet, but it just looks ridiculous to have fry everywhere. they are starting to live in extra shells i have in there. catching them will be the worst part. i curse myself now for the sweet, yet complicated rock structure i created!

thanks for the info so far. just wanted to get some opinions and first hand experience from you all.

I've seen them as high as $30 is some pricer LFS's, but like Matt said we never get retail from LFS when we sale to them. Something else to keep in mind is if you want to start a good business relationship with the owner then you may not want to ask for too much just to make sure your going to have somewhere to dump the fella's in the future. :)

From the few LFS's I've seen carry them, $5-10 would sound about right to buy them from you, but it does depend a lot on the owner.

i'm with you on building a good relationship so i can dump the guys. i'm also going to wear the uniform for the aquarium i volunteer at when i go in because i hear the two best lfs in the area treat you a lot better if they know you are involved there.
