Hybrids are a possibility with assorted african's. For the most part they are almost always mbuna of sorts, and so you can expect certian things out of their behaviour. But there is always the exception to the rule however.

Well I work at a pet store and the reason that they are labeld as assorted is because thats how they are ordered. There are options on the fish order list and the fish can be ordered by type or as assorted. By getting assorted they get a variety of what ever is availible. So it doesnt necessarily mean they are hybrids.

i have a stupid question, but would it be okay to assume that the cichlids in a LFS ASSORTED CICHLIDS Tank, all get along, or would you still have to worry about compatability with each other, i was looking at my lfs Assorted cichlid tank the other day, and since im still learning about cichlids i didnt know what was what.

Most african cichlids in the 'assorted africans' tank are mbuna and for the most part are compatible with each other to a degree.

In some instances, however, you may find non-mbuna in the assorted tanks, such as nimbochromis venustus (the 'giraffe cichlids'), usually very small ones. These probably do better in hap set ups, rather than mbuna set ups as they require high protein diets, aren't as territorial, and get fairly large (10"+). I wouldn't consider them very compatible with mbuna.

So when I see that at PetsMart and what not, I assume that means various cichlids that have resulted in cross breeding and will yield unpredictable fish personalities?

True? No?
I've seen defined species as well as hybrids of undetermined lineage all in the same 'assorted africans' tank before. I've also seen them just contain various species with no apparent hybrids.
