to make the back of my tank seem a bit more private I have put on the four corners some sticky back velcro. I the sewed four bits of velcro to a piece of cloth that I then stick on the back of my tank. This means that the fish have a bit of privacy when they hide behind my plants because nothing can be seen from behind.

I have different colored cloth that I use depending on how I feel when I clean my tank.

I am new to this but thought this was such a good idea I would share this with you.

Cheers

yep...

I have a very small tank (20ltrs), with 5 zebras and 2 Dwarf Corydoras. I have a castle thing in the middle (which the Corys love to hide in) and a plant in each side corner (which the zebras race to and from).

The tank is small because where I live at the moment there is no space for anything else. The fish all seem ok and I have had no problems. Once I move at the end of this year, I am looking to get a much bigger tank and thought that if I can keeps these fish alive until then in this small tank then a larger tank should be easier....  :D

What sort of tank (Make and Size) would you all recommend for a newbie?

Cheers

Well i think the bigger the better. Because this hobby is so addicting and if you don't want just a little fish, but alot, then you gonna have to get a bigger tank. I have 29 gallon, i'm planning to get a 75 gallon which I should of got earlier, but I did'nt so the things i know before, like stocked, fish size, etc.. so i the bigger the better. a good long term commitment tank, I think a 55 gallon would be really well suited.

Another thing I do for the back of the tanks, the larger tanks, is use some black bristol board you get at Office Depot.   it works nice on large tanks because it comes in 24x36" sheets.

the velcro sounds like an excellent idea, and would make removing it soooo much easier than having to pull tape off glass.  (leaves a sticky mess)

cool idea, i was wondering what i was going to do with the back of my 125g. i would hate to put the plastic picture stuff on  a 125g, its fine on my 35g but on a 125 it would almost seem tacky....my other idea was to create a slate background by using flat peices of slate ( like a jigsaw puzzle )and sticking them to a peice of plexi glass and slipping it down into place.  I thought that would look cool for sting rays and sharks...

Good idea Med!
I'm glad you made the point about the fishes feeling safe.  Talk about living in a glass house.  fish need privacy too.  I'm all for being creative with backgrounds.  We had alot of fun making backgrounds at my daughter's preschool.
