 *twirlysmi I was pretty busy having to travel to different parts of my country lately..(Almost every weekend Since November). I had an auto feeder feeding my 2 1.5" fantail. But every week, I changed water.

During December, one fine day, I noticed they aren't swimming properly. All seem to swim & stop, at times they stay at the bottom. I changed water and leave them at it is. One week later when i came back from my biz trip, i noticed one of my gold fish tail becomes hald the size. She could not swim. Only did I realised, it's fin rot.

I put them on Fin Rot medication, for 2 days, changed water, let them eat and free for one day and the next day I put them on medication again for another 2 days.

I've been putting them on and off medication for 2 weeks. I free them completely from medication for about a week now.

Question is : 1. Though the tail will not grow back so soon, how do i know they are in the rocess of healing and I can actually stopped the medication?

2. Is there any better medication for fin rot?

3. Will the tail grow back?

4. Why would this happen?

1. You should see the rot stop, and fins starting to grow back. If the tails are still getting shorter, they still have fin rot.

2. Yes, it will grow back.

3. It could be that there is too much food going into the tank, or that there are too many fish in the tank, or the temperature isn't correct. Have you checked the nitrate levels? A few large water changes should help.

I'm not familiar with the brand of medication you're using. Does it say what the main ingredients are?

I moved this to the disease section, so hopefully it will get some more replies.

What are your water parameters? We need to know things like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH levels. Fin rot means that you have poor water quality, likely because of inadequate water changes or too much waste in the tank.

The autofeeder also probably contributed greatly to your problem. If you are only gone for one weekend, please forego the auto feeder. You do not need it and many times they cause more trouble than they are worth. Healthy, well-fed fish can go a week without food quite easily.

That said, the most important thing for making them healthy again is clean water. Do plenty of water changes.

As for the medication, Maracyn Plus is really good, as is plain old aquarium salt. You should keep the medicine going until you see the fins healing, as lotus mentioned. If there is any black around the edges of the fins, you know they're not done healing. Only when the fins look healed up and start growing back does it mean the infection is under control.

ope it is ok to post in this thread.

2 of my angelfish have fin rot I think. I am sure they came home from the store with it. I didn't notice really until no :( they were both hiding so I couldn't see them that much. I used the Jungle fungus stuff. The water parameters are good no ammonia/nitrites etc. Can they be saved? I don't want to take them back to the store the two weeks is over tomorrow.

Thanks

The most important thing you can do with a fish with fin rot is to keep it in as pristine water conditions as possible with good nutrition. If they aren't too bad off, they'll recover naturally. What worries me more is that they're hiding. Are you sure it's fin rot and not due to aggression?

I don't see aggresion. The one that hides also hangs out right by the heater to. It is just angelfish and corys. I think the fin rot is pretty bad. I can't return them, can't find receipt and well I just put medicine in the tak how long til I should do a water change?
