Is it a freshwater or saltwater tank? In a freshwater tank, a few days with the lights off can help with algae. In saltwater, if you have corals, a day or two without lights is probably OK.

Also, look into the nutrient balance in the tank, as it's more likely the cause of the algae.

You should be changing the bulbs every six months or so in a saltwater tank. However, check your alkalinity, nitrates and phosphates, as those could be the source of your algae. Also check the flow in the tank. What kind of algae is it?
