Just thought I'd share my sad story from a few months ago that could have and SHOULD HAVE been prevented...

I was SOOO PLEASED w/ my African (mainly Malawi) tank. Back then my signature read: 40 Gallon African Planted: 3 Red Jewels, Red Zebra, Blue Malawi, Albino Red Top Zebra, Red Peacock, 2 Lemon Yellow (ready to spit out fry any day), Common Pleco. Those little buggers kept me thouroughly entertained. I had just gotten to the point where I had been able to "spend time" w/ each one & learn their unique personalities. I had gotten to watch the Electric Yellows mate which was very cool. I was very pleased w/ my first Cichlid tank!
Well, one day, towards the begining of May, it was time for a water change and I had just ran out of Stress Coat. I was at Walmart & remembered that I needed more. So I'm in the fish supply section when Tetra EasyBalance with Nitraban catches my attention. "Reduces frequent water changes." http://www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/product.aspx?id=74 "Wow, they improved the AquaSafe formula, added some beneficial ingredients." I thought to myself. I half-assed read the label (I was in a hurry). I grab it, finish my shopping & head home. About 15 minutes after performing a 40% water change, I notice that my beauties aren't looking so good. Almost all start coming to the surface and then the Blue Malawi starts turning upside down & twiching. "Somethings not right!" "Oh, no! Must be the water treatment!" Without hesitation, I fly out the door & make it back to Walmart in about 2 minutes (normally no less than a 5 minute drive). After snatching up some good 'ol stress coat, I'm back home in 15 minutes total. My keys hadn't even hit the counter before I had dumped 2 capfuls into the tank. "Greycie" the Blue Malawi was belly up under a rock. "Pepe" the Peacock, "Bertha" the Albino RT Zebra, and "Larry & Lisa" the Lemon Yellows were all floating around twitching trying to cling on to life. I scooped them up & threw 'em in my 10gal community tank (I wasn't sure what else to do.) Well, after it was all "said & done," all 5 of the above died. At one point, I even tried to see if I could save the fry from Lisa's mouth but, of course, it was a lost cause.
After some sad toilet flushing it was time to asses the damage. Looking into the seemingly empty tank, the Jewel sisters and "K" the Red Zebra poke their heads out. It doesn't surprise me that K survived. He was and still is a though, mean little bastard! He has and always will be the Ruler of the Tank! After ENTIRELY reading the back label of the EasyBalance bottle, I wanted to kick myself! One of the LAST lines at the BOTTOM of the label read: "Note: EasyBalance® is not a tap water conditioner and will not neutralize harmful chlorine or chloramines. When adding tap water to the aquarium it is recommended you always use Tetra AquaSafe® according to its directions." PLEASE don't make the same DUMBASS mistake that I did!

If you look at my signature now, I have gone a different rout & added some South Americans. I must admit, I have had great success in the mixing. Two of the Jewels have since perished (probably because of the stress from my little ERROR!) K is still a bully but everything else seems great! My Convicts are such AWESOME parents! Since I am mentioning them, I do have a question that maybe someone can answer. I read somewhere that the females are smaller and have golden scales on their belly. With my pair, the larger is about 3 1/2'' with really no coloration other than the black & white stripes. The other is half that size w/ a golden belly & some beautiful turquoise coloration on the fins. The thing that confuses me is that when they mate, I notice the eggs on the cave wall & it looks like the smaller one is fertilizing them. I confused!

Wow...very sorry to hear about the mixup and your losses, and thanks for the warning.

Sorry...dont know much about convicts...but maybe someone else will chime in on that one. Usually when they're breeding they're known to be particularly brutal and kill off other things in the tank, so I'm kinda surprised to hear things are working out so well with a breeding pair in that tank.

For future reference (and ease on the pocketbook) I buy Bigal's version of water conditioner by the 1/2 gallon...and its basically generic stress coat just much cheaper and comes in a bigals bottle ;)

Yeah! They OWN 1/3 of the tank. The end w/ the filter. No one else DARES go there unless they stay up high! Then the other 2/3 is OWNED by K. He wants nothing less than ALL of my attention when I'm around. Needless to say, its a pretty ACTIVE tank!

In case anyone is wondering; I call him K because when he was younger, he had a very distinct script "K" on his top fin about 1/2" from the end, viewable from his left side. It was very unique! I wish I had gotten a pic of it!

Never heard of Bigals. Is it sold in LFSs?

Oh...sorry no its online www.bigalsonline.com there are some big als pet stores in canada, but I dont think there are any in the US. Just go to their main page and click on the USA portion. Their prices are awesome, usually equipment and everything is cheaper through bigals INCLUDING SHIIPPING than buying it at Petsmart or a local store. If I can wait for something I usually get it there so I can have more $$ for my actual stocking :)

Too Late

I just had the same exact experience. My daughter overfed her goldfish and I came home to a gunked up tank. I went ahead and moved the fish into a holding bowl and added EasyBalance and went ahead and cleaned out their tank. I was back 20 minutes later to see the fish listing, I thought something was in the bowl that they didnt like, I rushed getting the tank back together and added EasyBalance to their tank and they were not improving. I then read the label and completely, and in the very last line I see the warning. WTF?!?!?!

I think it is very irresponsible for TetraAqua not to have that more clearly labled on their packaging. 2 of the 3 fish are dead and that 3rd one is not looking so hot. I did find some other conditioner I had and I hope the 3rd survives. I do not look forward to telling my 8 year old daughter in the morning that I killed her princesses.

I take responsibility for what I did, but dammit TetraAqua, can you put 5 little words on the label? "Not A Tap Water Conditioner"?!?!?! I'm now experienced, but I clearly won't be a TetraAqua customer any longer.

Wow, guys...sorry for your losses.
It really sucks when products aren't labeled as clearly as they could be.

I'm sure this will help others to avoid the same pitfalls that you encountered, so thanks for the heads-up.

Sorry to hear of all your losses. Makers of all these meds and water purifiers never seem to make the labels all that clear.

Thanks for the heads up

female convicts actually have a red belly and full grown will be about 4 inches while the male will be 5-6 and grow a slight hump.
ive never heard of a convict having a golden belly though...that might just be colorations of it.
and btw, the male will eventually start beating up the female to the point he may kill her after about 3 spawns. just so you know, you might want to seperate for a bit.

Probably just fanning fresh water over the eggs to keep them clean and fresh - in some species both the male and the female share this chore.

Wow! I had almost forgotten about this thread & just about gotten over my loss. THANKS A LOT jbro! Just kidding! Sorry about your loss!

I guess an update is due: K (the only lasting survivor) is STILL around! HE is one TOUGH MOTHER!!! STILL the tank A-Hole! Even my convict pair avoid him at ALL costs, even when spawing, which is taking place now, again!

I've had these two since just after the "mishap" & they are inseperable. They are the cutest couple you have ever seen. Yeah they have a "tiff" every now & then but I'm tellin' ya they are two peas in a pod!
