I am planning on starting up a 29g and am thinking about buying a canister for it instead of using my old HOB. I know canisters are mainly used for larger tanks, but I would prefer a canister on the 29 for the money I would save in the long run and the superior filteration they provide. I haven't decided on the fish I will be keeping in it yet, but it won't be anything to touchy.
My knowledge on aquarium equipment is a few years out dated, since I haven't done much research lately. Recommendations and info needed, thanks!

can't beat a eheim. I have a Pro II 2026. best on the market in my opinion. purchased at Drs. Foster and Smith. if you are worried about a vortex developing in the tank you can always buy the upgrade piping and drill out the return holes. i did and it makes one sweet filter. some current but nothing significant. fish deal with it beautifully.

Eheims are certainly top of the line. I have never used one, but there's no doubt about their quality. However, when doing my own research a couple of years ago, I ended up buying 2 of the filstar XP type canister filters. What sold me was the price, baskets with handles for easy cleaning, auto priming, and an auto shut off if the motor starts to overheat. 2 years later I am still very satisfied and am thinking about buying another. They are also so quiet that I sometimes have to put my hand on the top to make sure it is running. An XP1 for your 29 gal. would be an excellent choice.

I use a Fluval 204 on my 27G. I like it alot. At first I got it because it was cheap. People told me it was a good filter for the price. I knew Eheims were better designed and built and provided better filtration... but I didn't want to invest that much money.

A couple months later, I needed filters for another tank, and I bought 2 more Fluvals. So now I have 3 of them. 1 204 and 2 304. I still like them. Cheap. effective, silent... I guess you can have more if you pay more, but since I got them, I aint got nothing to complaint about.

hope this can help

Thanks very much for the suggestions!

egunsellers, I have a few questions about the filstar XP1. I noticed that it only comes with one media basket, is that inconveinent (sp?) at all? The canisters I have worked with have a media basket for each type of filteration. Also, are they compatable with bio balls? I am drawn to the filstar because of the gph it provides (for future aquariums I will use it on) and the media it includes for the money.
