What type food to use depends on the species. What brand is ultimately up to you. Some African cichlids are carnivores, with others being herbivores, and in the middle omnivores. Feeding the wrong types of foods can cause illness and eventualy death. Mbuna for example are sometimes seen with a disease called 'Malawi Bloat' which can be caused by feeding food with to much protien content.

I feed my cichlids OSI cichlid flakes, LFS brand freshwater & spirulina flakes, OSI spirulina pellets, Hikari cichlid gold and cichlid complete, SBB frozen blood worms and brine shrimp.

what type of New Life Spectrum does everyone use because i did some research and there is like 6 or7 different kind
I use NFS for Cichlid. I thought the growth was to make them grow faster but the customer service rep told me they're only good for frys.
